  • Who We Are

    Spirit Scientific is an advanced med-tech company focusing on minimal invasive treatment for orthopedic pain relief.
     

    Founded in 2013, we started out as an orthopedic medical device provider and strategically positioned ourselves as a minimal invasive VCF (Vertebral Compression Fractures) specialist. Our novel product, Vessel-X®, solves the fatal industry pain point of cement leakage in traditional surgeries, and pioneered a new surgical technique named Vesselplasty with growing clinical adoption.
     

    In 2015, leveraging our orthopedic expertise, we formed a regenerative medicine division with a mission to mainstream platelet derived growth factor treatment in osteoarthritis and sports injuries.

    Leveraging our expertise in the orthopedic field, Spirit Scientific Lab is our latest venture into regenerative medicine.

    Launched in 2015, its mission is to mainstream platelet derived growth factor treatment in osteoarthritis and sports injuries with our patented Platelet-Lyophilized-Treatment (PLT) technology.

    As a technology platform, we leverage our core know-how by teaming up with strategic partners through licensing our Joint Venture to distribute targeted treatment applications.

    Daniel Lin

    Co-Founder, Board Member

     

    Daniel was previously a co-founder of Crosstrees Medical Inc., a minimally invasive spinal device company which developed instrument for VCFs, and served as Vice President of R&D until 2004. Daniel has nearly 20 years of experience in the Spinal industry. Daniel holds a B.S. degree from University of Southern California.

    Kwan Chiun (Chris) Lin

    Co-Founder, Board Member, Advisor

     

    Chris is well-known as one of the most successful Internet entrepreneurs and businessman in Taiwan. He co-founded KKBOX, Asia's largest internet music streaming service where he currently serves as the Group CEO. Chris holds a M.S. degree in Operations Research from Stanford University.

    Jiann-Shing Hsieh

    Chief Operating Officer, Board Member

     

    Mr. Hsieh has over 40 years of experiences in pharmaceutical and medical device industries. Among his earlier contributions at Central Medical Technologies, Inc., one of Spirit Scientific’s subsidiaries, Mr. Hsieh laid the foundation of our GMP and ISO 13485 certified production facility.

     

    Prior to that, Mr. Hsieh served as Executive Director of Sage Pharmaceuticals (USA) and as the GM and Director (current) of Taiwan Veterans Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Veterans Affairs Council of the Executive Yuan. Mr. Hsieh holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from National Defense Medical Center.

    Sharp Lin, Ph.D.

    Chief Research Officer

     

    Dr. Lin has over 40 years of research experience in chemistry, and had worked alongside the late Jerry Lin, founder of Central Medical Technologies, Inc., in R&D for over 20 years. He is also the inventor of 50+ worldwide patents in the medical device, chemistry, electronic and software engineering fields.

     

    As Chief Research Officer, Dr. Lin leads Spirit Scientific’s R&D team and oversees the growth and construction of our IP Portfolio. Prior to that, Dr. Lin served as Vice President at several prestigious IP firms, where he and his team prepared and/or prosecuted patent applications in a wide variety of technical areas. Mr. Lin earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from National Taiwan University.

    Jack Ting

    Chief Business Officer

     

    Jack joined Spirit Scientific in 2013 and brought with him over 20 years of sales & marketing experience. As Chief Business Officer, Jack spearheads the expansion of global distribution channels in EU, SEA and MENA, and played a vital role to the strong growth of CN market from 2014~2018. Along with Hank, they carry out Board Room decisions in Spirit Scientific’s daily operations.

     

    Prior to that, Jack served as the Senior Director at Hua Wei Industrial, where he successfully closed business projects with major international clients such as COSTCO and The Home Depot. Jack holds a Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington.

    Hank Hsu, CFA

    Vice President of Finance

     

    Hank joined Spirit Scientific in 2017 and oversees finance and general management departments, whereby formulates business and functional-level strategies and secures new funding.

     

    Hank began his career in medical device industry as VP of BD and Executive Assistant to GM at Biotech-One Inc., where he successfully carried out new market development, and reduced production cost and lead time. Prior to that, he worked in the financial industry as an institutional sales manager in Hong Kong and hedge fund analyst in Los Angeles. Hank holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation, and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from University of Southern California.

    Steven Lin, M.D.

    General Manager of Spirit Scientific Lab

     

    Steven joined Spirit Scientific in 2015 specifically for our Regenerative BU, Spirit Scientific Lab. Steven spearheaded its launch, formulated its business model, took Spirit Scientific Lab from “zero to one” and carries out Board Room decisions.

     

    Prior to that, Steven served as the Business Unit Project Manager at Panion & BF Biotech Inc. and Associate Director of Risk Management at Pfizer at its New York headquarter. Steven earned his Doctor of Medicine from Stanford University.

    Chiu S. Lin Ph.D.

    Dr. Lin is a 30-plus year veteran at US FDA and a former Director of the FDA's Division of Anesthesiology, General Hospital, Infection Control and Dental Devices.

     

    Dr. Lin is a distinguished speaker and author on topics related to medical device regulatory approval, and serves as an advisor or consultant to a number of life science companies varying in stages.

    Larry T. Khoo, M.D.

    Dr. Larry Teik-man Khoo, M.D. completed his degree in Biological Sciences at Stanford University. He went on to graduate magna cum laude from Yale Medical School, and completed his internship and residency in neurological surgery at University of Southern California where he developed an early research interest in spinal surgery. This focus culminated with the Congress of Neurological Surgery awarding him the prestigious inaugural 2001 Ralph Cloward Medtronics Fellowship Award which he completed at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.

     

    Over the years, Dr. Koo pioneered and validated many minimally invasive spinal surgical procedures in over 60 peer reviewed journal articles, 10 patents, 60 book chapters, 2 full books, and 400 scientific presentations.

     

    Dr. Khoo’s clinical interests include minimally invasive spinal decompression of stenosis, percutaneous spinal fusion techniques, motion preserving spinal technologies, spinal segment regeneration, osteoporotic stabilization, image guided surgery, complex cervical spine reconstruction, and less invasive treatment of spinal tumors.

    Bambang Darwono, M.D., Ph.D.

    Dr. Aloysius Bambang Darwono, former Colonel of Indonesian Army and world-renowned spine surgeon, is an expert in performing innovative minimally-invasive surgical treatments with an expertise in high complexity cases. He currently serves as Chief of Orthopaedic Section at Pluit Hospital and Gading Pluit Hospital in Indonesia.

     

    Dr. Bambang attended medical school at University of UNISSULA Semarang, and completed his surgical internship at State University of Diponegoro Semarang and orthopaedic surgical residency at State University of Indonesia Jakarta. He earned his Ph.D. at State University of Gajah Mada Yogyakarta.

     

    Dr. Bambang has edited several textbooks on spinal surgery, and serves as editor for notable medical journals. He is the Council member of Asia Pacific Society of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (PASMISS), and member of Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association (APOA), North American Spine Society (NASS) and International Affiliate member of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeon (AAOS). Dr. Bambang is also the President of the Indonesian Spine Socienty (ISS).

    Philip S. Yuan, M.D.

    Dr. Yuan specializes in the treatment of Degenerative and Traumatic Spinal Disorders, Adult Spinal Deformities, and Osteoporotic Compression Fractures. He earned a B.S. degree with distinction in Biochemistry in 1993 from Cornell University, and qualified as a Howard Hughes Scholar. Dr. Yuan earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1997 from the University of Michigan Medical School.


    Dr. Yuan moved to the West Coast for both his Internship in General Surgery and residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California San Diego.

    Sheng-Mou Hou, M.D., Ph.D., MPH

    Dr. Sheng-Mou Hou was the 10th Minister of Health in Taiwan, and he is currently the Dean of Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital and Honorary Professor at NTU.

     

    Dr. Hou gained his clinical experiences in National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) Department of Orthopedic Surgery and later served as Associate Dean of NTUH and Dean of Taipei City Hospital.

     

    Dr. Hou graduated with his M.D. from National Taiwan University (NTU) School of Medicine, following which he earned his Ph.D. from NTU's Graduate School of Clinical Medicine, specializing in orthopedics. Dr. Hou was an Orthopedic Fellow at Duke University Medical Center and earned his MPH at Johns Hopkins University's School of Hygiene and Public Health.

     

    Dr. Hou has published over 250 scientific papers in international journals, and won awards for his wide-ranging research in the fields of orthopedic medicine, joint reconstruction surgery, and hip replacement from the Taiwan Orthopedic Association and the International College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Orthopedic Association and a lifetime member of the Australia Hand Surgery Society. Dr. Hou also heads the Taiwan Orthopedics Research Society, the Taiwan Orthopedic Association, and the Joint Reconstruction Society of the ROC. Dr. Hou is also a trustee of AO association.
